Fort Smith is located in western Arkansas along the Arkansas River. With a population of 87,845 as of 2019, it is the second largest city in Arkansas behind Little Rock. History

Fort Smith got its start as a military fort established in 1817. It was a strategic location along the Arkansas River bordering Indian Territory. The fort was originally built to promote peace between settlers and Native Americans on the Western frontier. It was also used during the Trail of Tears era as thousands of Native Americans passed through on their forced relocation westward. Over the years Fort Smith would play a pivotal role in settling the frontier and establishing law and order in the region.

Today, Fort Smith embraces its unique history. The original fort site is now protected as the Fort Smith National Historic Site.
