According to Wikipedia, Yuma had an estimated population of 95,502 in 2019, making it the 135th largest city in the United States. Yuma is currently the 4th largest city in Arizona behind Phoenix, Tucson, and Mesa.

The population of Yuma grew rapidly during the 20th century, from 5,315 in 1910 to 77,515 in 1980. Much of this growth came from the need to provide housing and services to military personnel stationed at Yuma Proving Ground and Marine Corps Air Station Yuma during World War II.

The racial makeup of Yuma is predominantly White (64.5%), followed by Native American (5.5%), Black or African American (3.2%), Asian (1.6%), and other races (24.7%). The city has a large Hispanic/Latino population, making up 55% of residents. About 32% of households speak a language other than English at home.

History

The area around Yuma was first inhabited by various Native American tribes for centuries before Europeans arrived, including the Quechan and Cocopah peoples who still have reservations located near Yuma today. The name "Yuma" comes from the native word "Yuum" meaning "son of the chief."

The first European presence in the area came with the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza, who passed through in 1774 while establishing an overland route to California. The Mormon Battalion also came through during the Mexican-American War in 1846. Soon after California was ceded to the United States, the town of Colorado City was founded near Yuma Crossing in 1850.

Yuma City was incorporated in 1871 and became the county seat of Yuma County in 1873. It served as a key steamboat and ferry crossing point over the Colorado River for many years. The Southern Pacific Railroad reached Yuma in 1877, bringing significant economic growth and development. Agriculture, particularly citrus fruits, lettuce and cattle, became important parts of the economy.

Yuma grew substantially during the 20th century thanks to its military installations, agricultural production and ideal winter climate. Today it remains an important hub for transportation, trade and migration across the U.S.-Mexico border.
