History of Sierra Vista

The history of Sierra Vista dates back to the early 19th century when the area was inhabited by the Apache tribe. In 1848, the United States gained control of the region after the Mexican-American War. Fort Huachuca was established in 1877 to fight against the Apache. The opening of the fort led to the development of a small settlement known as Charleston. In 1871, a Post Office was established in Charleston and renamed Sierra Vista in 1878.

The establishment of Fort Huachuca bolstered the local economy by providing jobs and necessities. In the 1950s, Sierra Vista began to grow substantially. Thanks in part to the military presence and technological investments, Sierra Vista was incorporated as a city in 1956. Over the years, Sierra Vista continued to grow as businesses were established to support the military community.

Today, Sierra Vista retains its close ties with Fort Huachuca which houses the U.S. Army Intelligence Center and the U.S. Army Network Enterprise Technology Command. The military remains a key part of the local economy and community.
