Phenix City lies immediately west across the Chattahoochee River from much larger Columbus, Georgia. Sometimes called Hub City or Gateway to Alabama from the Interstate 85/185 bridge over the Chattahoochee River.

Ida Bell Wells-Barnett Museum

Located at 824 4th Avenue in downtown Phenix City, the Ida Bell Wells-Barnett Museum celebrates the life of Phenix City native Ida B. Wells-Barnett (1862 - 1931), who was an African-American journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, sociologist, and an early leader in the civil rights movement. She documented lynching in the United States.
