History

Montgomery was founded in 1819 as a planned city along the Alabama River. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City in Canada. It replaced the temporary capital of Tuscaloosa and was designated as the permanent capital of Alabama in 1846.

Montgomery played a prominent role in the American Civil War and was named the first capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861. The city was the site of Jefferson Davis' inauguration as President of the Confederate States of America. It was also the location of significant slave trade activity until the mid-19th century.

The city was an important center of civil rights activities in the mid-20th century. It was the site of the Montgomery bus boycott from 1955-1956 which led to a U.S. Supreme Court decision ending racial segregation on public transportation. Other important events included the 1961 Freedom Rides and the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
