Mobile is a city located in southwest Alabama along the Gulf Coast. With a population of around 190,000 as of 2018, it is the second most populous city in Alabama after Birmingham. Mobile has a rich history and culture and is home to several museums, historic sites, performing arts venues, and outdoor attractions.

History

Mobile was founded in 1702 by French colonists and became one of the first colonial capitals of French Louisiana. It was originally named Fort Louis de la Mobile after Louis XIV. In 1711, it was moved from its original site to its current location at the confluence of the Mobile River and Mobile Bay and renamed Mobile. It became part of British West Florida in 1763 before being seized by Spain during the American Revolutionary War. Mobile later became part of the Mississippi Territory in 1813 and the state of Alabama in 1819.

As of the 2020 census, Mobile had a population of 187,041 making it the second most populous city in Alabama behind Birmingham. The racial makeup of the city is 50.4% Black or African American, 45.4% White, 2.2% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 1.3% from two or more races. 4.1% of the population identifies as Hispanic or Latino.
