Hoover is a city in Jefferson and Shelby counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 91,062, making it the sixth largest city in Alabama.

Population

According to the Wikipedia page for Hoover, the city had an estimated population of 91,062 as of 2020. This makes it the 6th largest city in the state of Alabama. The population density was estimated to be around 1,500 people per square mile.

Hoover grew very rapidly from a small suburb of Birmingham in the 1980s and 1990s. Much of this growth was fueled by white flight from the city of Birmingham in the wake of the Civil Rights Movement. However, in more recent years, the population growth has slowed as the city has become more built out.

History

Hoover was founded in 1967 by William J. Rushton. It was originally a planned suburb on land that used to belong to the Rushton family farm. The city was named after William Hoover, a local industrialist who owned a large factory in the area.

One of the key early events in Hoover's history was the construction of the Riverchase Galleria shopping mall in 1969. This helped establish the city as a major shopping and retail destination in the region.
