Toms River

Toms River is a township located in Ocean County, New Jersey along the Jersey Shore. With a population of over 90,000 residents, it is one of the largest municipalities in the state. Toms River has grown rapidly in recent decades and has emerged as a major suburban hub within the New York metropolitan area.

Population

According to the 2020 United States Census, Toms River’s population was 92,846. This makes it the 8th most populous municipality in New Jersey. The population density is 2,367 people per square mile. Toms River has grown significantly since the 1970s, more than doubling its population each decade between 1970 and 2010. Much of this growth came from migration of residents from northern parts of New Jersey as well as New York City seeking more affordable housing and suburban amenities.

Economy

Toms River has a diverse economy with strengths in healthcare, retail, technology and tourism. Some of the major employers in Toms River include Community Medical Center, Ocean County government, CarePoint Health and Wolters Kluwer. Toms River is home to many shopping centers and malls such as Seacourt Pavilion and Ocean County Mall which provide retailers access to local consumers. The technology sector has a growing presence in Toms River with companies such as Commvault and MicroStrategy operating major facilities in town.

Tourism

Tourism is a major part of Toms River’s economy, especially during the summer months. Toms River’s location on the Jersey Shore and proximity to the beach draws many visitors during the warmer months. Popular attractions include Downtown Toms River, the Gateway National Recreation Area and the Ocean County Park which offers swimming, boating and other recreational activities. The township has beach access at Ortley Beach, Normandy Beach and Monterey Beach. Several motels and hotels such as the Howard Johnson cater to summer tourists and visitors.

Landmarks

Some of the most notable landmarks in Toms River include the River Lady statue, the Toms River Seaport Society Maritime Museum and Ocean County Landfill which was once infamous for being the largest landfill in the United States. The Toms River Waterfront Park along the Toms River is a popular recreational area with walking paths and access to the river.

Government

Toms River operates within a Township form of government. The township council consists of the mayor and four council members elected to four-year terms. The current mayor of Toms River is Maurice “Mo” Hill Jr. The township provides a full range of services including police, public works, parks and recreation, health and human services and more. Sports

For local sports teams, Toms River is home to the Toms River Black Bears, a minor league baseball team that plays in the South Atlantic League. Winding River Skating Center is a popular ice skating rink that hosts youth hockey leagues and competitions.
