Silver Spring is a census-designated place in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It had a population of 76,716 as of the 2010 census, making it the fourth most populous place in Maryland.

History

The area that is now Silver Spring has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native American tribes. European settlement of the area began in the 1700s when surveyor Francis Preston Blair explored the area and named it “Silver Spring” after a mica-flecked spring discovered there. The arrival of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in the late 1800s transformed Silver Spring into a bustling commuter suburb of Washington, D.C. The community continued to grow rapidly throughout the 20th century. Notable events in Silver Spring’s history include:
