Pleasanton is a city in Alameda County, California with a population of 82,314 as of the 2020 census. Pleasanton is located in the San Francisco Bay Area about 25 miles east of Oakland and 6 miles west of Livermore.

History

Pleasanton was originally home to the Muwekma Ohlone Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the 19th century, establishing ranches and farms. In 1894, the town of Pleasanton was incorporated, named after General Alfred Pleasonton who had defeated Confederates in the American Civil War.

Pleasanton grew slowly as an agricultural town known for wheat farming and cattle ranching. In the 1950s, Pleasanton began transitioning to a suburban residential community. Several large suburban neighborhoods and apartment complexes were built. With its proximity to Silicon Valley, many tech workers moved to Pleasanton.

As of the 2020 census, Pleasanton had a population of 82,314 people. Pleasanton has grown rapidly in recent decades. In 1970, the population was just 18,328. By 1990 it had reached 58,389. Much of this growth came from the development of new housing and the city’s popularity as a family-oriented suburb.

The racial makeup of Pleasanton is predominantly white, with Asian being the next largest group. The median age is 41.3 and the median household income is $139,076, well above the national median.
