Pharr, Texas

Pharr is a city in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 84,532 making it the 26th largest city in Texas. Pharr lies on the southern side of the Rio Grande Valley near McAllen and is part of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission and Reynosa–McAllen metropolitan areas.

History

The city of Pharr has its origins tracing back to 1907 when it was established as a switching point for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It was originally known as the community of “Las Milpas.” In 1925, the name was changed to Pharr after sugar cane farmer and local community leader Henry N. Pharr. Henry Pharr was instrumental in helping establish the town and bringing irrigation and electricity into the Rio Grande Valley.

As of the 2020 US Census, Pharr had a population of 84,532 making it the 138th largest city in the United States. Pharr boasts a young population with a median age of 30.7 years old. It has experienced rapid growth, more than doubling in population since 1990 when the population was just 33,828. It is estimated that the current 2023 population is now over 90,000 residents.

Pharr is led by a council-manager style government. The city council consists of the mayor and six council members elected to serve three year terms. The day-to-day operations are managed by a city manager appointed by the city council.
