Madison, Wisconsin

Madison is the capital and second largest city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, Madison had a population of 259,680, making it the second-largest city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee. Madison is the county seat of Dane County and forms part of the Madison Metropolitan Area which had a population of 663,296.

History

Madison was founded in 1836 when former federal judge James Duane Doty purchased over a thousand acres of swamp and forest land on the isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona. He built a house there and named the settlement “Madison” after then-President James Madison.
