Lakewood is a city in Los Angeles County, California. As of the 2020 census, the population of Lakewood was 80,997 residents, making it the 81st largest city in California. Lakewood incorporated as a city in 1954 and has developed into a major suburb in the Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area.

Population

According to the 2020 census, Lakewood had a population of 80,997 people. This is an increase from 79,345 residents counted in the 2010 census. Lakewood has a population density of 7,973 people per square mile.

The racial makeup of Lakewood is 46.8% White, 11.9% Asian, 10.7% Black or African American, 1.1% Native American, 0.4% Pacific Islander, 23.2% from other races, and 5.8% from two or more races. 53.6% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 26,588 households in Lakewood, with an average household size of 3.04 people. The median age is 35.5 years old. The gender breakdown is 49.7% male and 50.3% female.

Lakewood experienced rapid population growth in the 1950s and 1960s as the aerospace industry expanded. Although growth has slowed, Lakewood’s population has continued to increase steadily over the decades.
