Independence is a city located in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city had a total population of 116,925 making it the fourth-largest city in the state of Missouri. Independence has a rich history as it was originally inhabited by Native American tribes and was later settled by pioneers traveling west on the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon trails. Today, Independence is known for being the hometown of former US President Harry S. Truman and for attractions like the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum.

Population

According to the 2020 US Census, Independence had a population of 116,925 making it the 13th largest city in the Midwest and the 4th largest city in the state of Missouri after Kansas City, St. Louis, and Springfield. The city has grown steadily over the decades rising from 86,000 residents in 1980 to over 116,000 as of 2020. Population density is around 1,476 people per square mile.

Independence has a predominantly White population making up nearly 84% of residents. Other major racial groups include Black or African American at nearly 8%, Hispanic or Latino at 4%, Asian at 2%, and Native American at 0.5%.

Over a quarter of the population (27.8%) are under the age of 18 reflecting a sizable youth population. Seniors age 65 and over make up just 12% of the population. The median age is 35.6 years old which is slightly lower than the US median age of 38.1 years.

In terms of households, over half are considered family households at 58.7%, while non-family households such as single occupancy make up 41.3%. The average household size is 2.45 people.
