Hamilton

Hamilton is a township in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township had a total population of 88,464, making it the largest municipality in the county and the ninth-largest municipality in the state. Hamilton was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 11, 1842, from portions of the now-defunct Nottingham Township.

According to the Wikipedia page for Hamilton Township, the 2010 Census showed there were 88,464 people living in 32,772 housing units. The racial makeup of Hamilton was 55.58% White, 24.83% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 2.69% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 13.16% from other races, and 3.39% from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race made up 30.93% of the population.

The Census Bureau’s 2006-2010 American Community Survey showed that the median household income was $67,499 and the median family income was $77,498. About 7.5% of families and 9.5% of the population were below the poverty line.

Economy and Major Employers

Historically, Hamilton Township has been known for its extensive steelmaking industry including John A. Roebling’s Sons Company wire works. Over the years, the township has transitioned into a more diverse economy including advanced manufacturing, healthcare, education, retail, and warehousing.

According to the township’s website, major private employers today include Capital Health, Amazon, Stryker Orthopaedics, Siemens, and Walmart. Public sector employers include the Hamilton Township School District and Mercer County government offices.

The finance, insurance and real estate sectors account for 17% of jobs in the township. Healthcare and social assistance account for nearly 15% of jobs, followed by retail at 12%. Manufacturing remains an important sector, accounting for 11% of employment.

Sports

Hamilton Township is home to the Trenton Thunder, a Minor League Baseball team. The Thunder play at Arm & Hammer Park and are the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The team has won five Eastern League championships.
