History

The land that is now Baldwin Park was inhabited by the Tongva people for thousands of years before Europeans arrived in California. The Spanish claimed the land as part of Alta California in the late 18th century.

In 1841, the land became part of Rancho La Puente, a Mexican land grant given to John Rowland and William Workman. They established a successful cattle ranching operation on the land. After California became part of the United States in 1848, the rancho attracted American settlers.

In 1863, Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin purchased Rancho La Puente and other ranchos in the area. His land was developed for agriculture and became known as Baldwin’s Ranch. In the late 19th century, Baldwin helped attract a railroad line through his property, establishing a townsite in 1887 named Kingsley.

The town struggled until irrigation arrived in the early 20th century, allowing citrus orchards, walnuts, and strawberries to flourish. In 1906, the town was incorporated as Vineland. Its name changed to Baldwin Park in 1927 to honor Elias Baldwin’s influence in attracting the rail line.

After World War II, Baldwin Park transformed from an agricultural town into a suburban bedroom community. Its population boomed as many white residents moved in from Los Angeles. Starting in the 1960s, it also attracted immigrants from Latin America and Asia seeking affordable housing and proximity to jobs in LA.
