Auburn is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 78,660 at the 2020 census. Auburn is located 29 miles (47 km) south of Seattle and 18 miles (29 km) northeast of Tacoma. Auburn is nestled in a valley formed by the Green River and the White River, and is surrounded by tall forests. The city’s origins can be traced back to the Northern Pacific Railroad’s decision to build a subsidiary line extending from the main line at Tenino through to coal fields located at Black Diamond. The town of Slaughter was founded in 1887 adjacent to where the railroad was constructing its new branch. Shortly after, the town was renamed to Auburn in 1893.

Auburn’s population grew rapidly in the 20th century, from 1,729 in 1900 to over 70,000 by 2000. Major annexations of surrounding unincorporated areas in the 1990s contributed to this fast-paced growth.
