Riverview is a census-designated place located in Hillsborough County in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population of Riverview was 71,054 residents, making it the 3rd largest community in Hillsborough County.
History
The area now known as Riverview was first settled in the 1840s. It was originally called Peru, named after the abundant local crop of Peru tomatoes. In 1885, the first post office was established in the community, but the name was changed to River Junction since mail was often confused with the city of Peru, Indiana.
In 1911, the town name was changed again to Riverview due to its scenic views of the Alafia River. Throughout the early 20th century, Riverview remained a small agricultural community known for crops like strawberries, citrus fruits, cattle, and poultry.
Significant growth began in Riverview began in the 1990s as the broader Tampa Bay region expanded. Riverview continues to grow as a suburb of Tampa and is now the 3rd largest community in Hillsborough County.

Riverview is located approximately 10 miles southeast of downtown Tampa along the Alafia River. It spans an area of about 17 square miles.
As of the 2020 census, Riverview had a population of 71,054 people living in 26,206 housing units. The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.7% White, 7.8% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 3.6% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.0% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. 20.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
