Springdale, Arkansas

Springdale is a city located in northwest Arkansas in both Washington and Benton counties. According to the 2020 census, the population of Springdale was 89,054 making it the fourth largest city in Arkansas behind Little Rock, Fort Smith, and Fayetteville.

Population

As of the 2020 census, the population of Springdale was 89,054 residents. This is an increase from the 2010 census when the population was 69,797. The city has experienced rapid growth in recent decades. In 1990, the population was just 29,529 residents. Much of this growth is attributed to the poultry industry, manufacturing, and transportation sectors.

Springdale is considered part of the Fayetteville–Springdale–Rogers Metropolitan Statistical Area. This metro area includes three Arkansas counties: Benton, Madison, and Washington. According to 2021 estimates, the population of this metro area was 549,128 making it the second largest in Arkansas after Central Arkansas.

History

Springdale was originally called Shiloh, founded in 1872. The city was renamed Springdale in 1876. It was incorporated in 1878. The name Springdale comes from a spring near the original town site.

The economy of Springdale was originally based around fruit orchards and poultry farming. In 1947, John Tyson moved his poultry business to Springdale which helped it become a center for the poultry industry. Major companies headquartered in Springdale include Tyson Foods, George’s Inc., and Cargill.
