History
Glendale was founded in 1892 by William J. Murphy, a businessman who constructed a canal from the Arizona Canal to the northwest portion of the town. Growth was spurred by the arrival of the railroad in 1895. Glendale was incorporated as a city in 1910. Agriculture and cotton farming fueled early growth in the area. After World War II, Glendale saw rapid residential and commercial development as more people moved to the Phoenix metropolitan area.
