History

Chandler was founded by Dr. A.J. Chandler in 1912. He had purchased 80 acres of land that would later become the townsite of Chandler. At the time, the main industry in the area was agriculture. Cotton, hay, and grain were the main crops grown in the early days. Over time, Chandler evolved into more of a suburban city as industries like technology moved in and the population grew rapidly.

As mentioned previously, the 2021 population of Chandler was estimated at 272,677. This makes it the 5th largest city in Arizona after Phoenix, Tucson, Mesa, and Glendale. The population has exploded in recent decades. Back in 1980, the population was just 30,165 showing massive growth.

Chandler continues to grow rapidly. It is projected that the population could exceed 300,000 by 2025. The city has a large employment base in tech companies like Intel, Orbital ATK, Microchip Technology, and Rogers Corporation. It also benefits from being a suburb of Phoenix. Many commuters live in Chandler and work in Phoenix.
